In this article , we will talk about Transmission media in Networks .
So, read the article till the end for better understanding.
If we talk about proper definition of transmission media , then it can be defined as
transmission media can be anything that can carry information from a source to a destination . Its example can be : Transmission media for two people having a dinner conversation is air. For a written message , mail carrier can be a transmission media etc.
When two computers and other telecommunications devices are present in a network , they share information in the form of signals that is the result of a conversion of data from another form.
These signals transmitted from one device to another in the form electromagnetic energy, which is propagated through transmission media.
Aside note:
If you are familiar with OSI model , then you can think transmission media as layer 0, located below physical layer and directly controlled by physical layer.
The transmission media is usually free space(air), metallic cable or fiber optic cable. In telecommunications, transmission media can be divided into two broad categories :
- Guided media (wired)
- Unguided media (wireless)
GUIDED MEDIA
In guided media, a physical path exist that provide a conduit from one device to another. A signal travelling through it, is directed.
Guided media is classified in three types :
(i) Twisted pair Cable :
(ii) Coaxial Cable :
(iii) Fiber optic Cable :
UNGUIDED MEDIA
Unguided media transport electromagnetic waves without using a physical conductor . In Unguided media, signals are transmitted through free space.
It is also of three types :
- Radiowaves
- Microwaves
- Infrared waves
